Natural stone and porcelain tiles are timeless and beautiful options for your home but it is important to keep them well maintained and looking new. They offer durability and easy maintenance in a variety of colours, textures and patterns.
Porcelain (& Ceramic) Tiles
Clean Regularly - sweep and vacuum regularly and use a damp mop with warm water for the surface. Add a mild detergent to the water if needed to remove staining.
Prevent Scratches - although durable, it can still be scratched so avoid dragging heavy furniture or objects and use felt or rubber on furniture legs.
Maintain the Grout - grout will typically be the first thing to look aged, use a grout cleaner or baking soda paste with a toothbrush or a small brush with bristles. For extra tough wear and staining, use a steam cleaner.
Natural Stone
Clean Regularly - use a damp mop with a natural stone cleaner and wipe up any significant liquid immediately. Grout can be porous as well so use a specific grout cleaner and sealant to avoid staining.
Seal Often - although many of our customers appreciate the patina that natural stone offers, since it is porous, it is important to seal it regularly to avoid significant damage. Use a natural stone sealant every 6-12 months depending on the material and use.
Prevent Scratches & Pooling - natural stone is prone to discolouring and scratching, ensure that your furniture has felt or rubber and use mats in high traffic areas. Water pooling can cause damage over time so ensure there is proper drainage.
Avoid any harsh or abrasive chemicals for both options as it can lead to discolouration and degradation over time!
